I avoided posting about this at first since it has been covered before, but many have asked about the Washington Generals win in 1971. It should be noted that while many people think that this is the only time the Washington Generals beat the Globetrotters, that is actually not true.

The New Jersey Reds upset the Harlem Globetrotters 100-99 on a buzzer-beating shot in overtime by the team’s owner, Red Klotz. At the time, Klotz said it was like “we killed Santa Claus” after the game Jan. 5, 1971. Fans in Martin, Tenn., were aghast that their favorite team had just lost to their traveling companions. The Reds would eventually become the Washington Generals, the team that keeps losing to the Globetrotters today. Klotz is the only non-Globetrotter to get his name on the Ring of Legends.

According to the Harlem Globetrotters press releases, they have over 23000 wins against 345 losses. I decided to research their “modern day” losses (i.e. post-World War II). It’s interesting to note that I discovered several losses that are not counted in the Globetrotters “official record”. Likewise, there are many wins that the Globetrotters did not count either.
